A friend of mine who worked on a survey crew with me for years, sent me these pictures of a monument he visited south of Centralia, IL. a Cardinal Point Witness Corner monument. The monument was erected in 1976 by the IRLSA (now the IPLSA), to witness the point at the intersection of the Third Principal Meridian and PLSS Base Line, which has been covered by US Hwy 51 since – but is apparently accessible by a metal plate in the highway.
Takeaways:
– Granite PLSS Monuments & witnesses set by local chapters leave a great legacy that is fun and informative to visit and learn about for future generations.
– Once seasoned on a survey crew, you’ll retain an acuteness for finding monuments.
